Is it Worthwhile Getting Degree Qualified Graduates to Run Your Sales Team? »

Print friendly

Speaker Alastair Emerson, Lecturer, School of Management and Entrepreneurship, Unitec

These days, most marketers hold a tertiary qualification. And as many as 60% to 70% of them finish up in sales roles ... without the training they need to perform well.

There are a few courses available in New Zealand for sales managers and supervisors, but most focus on topics like recruitment, training, leadership, and motivation ... and usually from a universal rather than a sales viewpoint.

But what about those vital sales-specific topics like ...
  • territory allocation and costing
  • incentive programme design and management
  • sales planning and control systems (as opposed to budgets), and
  • managing the required levels of autonomy for sales people in the era of relationships and alliances?

Unlike overseas, the New Zealand tertiary sector has largely ignored the sales and sales management discipline. Two or three universities offer a single, elementary paper in sales management, but there's only one comprehensive, three stage degree course available through Unitec that's comparable to 'standard courses' offered in the UK and USA.

So, do New Zealand sales managers need upskilling? Is it worthwhile getting degree qualified graduates to run your sales team?

Alastair Emerson has a 20 year track record in sales training, and is the person behind Unitec's sales management undergraduate diploma and degree courses, and their in-house sales training.

At our May sales breakfast, Alastair will lead a lively, interactive discussion ...

  • Find out what's happening in sales education in New Zealand and what needs have been revealed through Unitec's research and teaching.

  • Meet graduates and students who are practising sales managers and supervisors and hear their perspectives on sales education and how it has affected their careers.

  • And, make sure you bring along your questions, comments, suggestions … and experiences.
