With Asian economies, rather than America, dominating the world market in the foreseeable future, traditional American and European approaches to sales and marketing will lose their effectiveness unless we actively adapt them. But how should we adapt them? How can we learn to communicate differently, what are the cultural values of New Zealand’s future? As Australian culture seems to move closer to American culture, New Zealand culture is a different sort of hybrid, which differs from either our Australian or Asian neighbours. What are the driving characteristics of the “new” NZ culture? What does Brand NZ mean internationally, and most importantly, to New Zealanders themselves? How will we express contemporary NZ, and how do we ensure that we benefit from “a new way”? These are the questions that will determine our success or failure as individuals, as a nation, and on the world stage, over the next 5–10 years. Following an education in the Fine Arts in London, Alan commenced his advertising career with Pye Records, designing album covers and promoting contemporary bands. An early design success during his formative agency years was the creation of the iconic ‘Thunderbirds’ logo. Emigrating to South Africa in 1967, Alan was employed in various creative positions with McCann International, J. Walter Thomson and other leading SA and international advertising agencies. Alan accepted a creative position in McCann NZ in 1974, and over the subsequent eight years held senior creative positions with some of NZ’s leading advertising companies. During this time Alan specialised in integrated TV, print and radio campaigns for clients including Air New Zealand, Kent Heating, Wrangler Jeans, Bacardi, Watkins Seeds, Teachers Whiskey, Caxton Tissues, Bulmer Cider, McCaulloch and Wellcome. 25 years ago Alan founded WOW Creative as a specialist design and advertising bureau, with clientele including Carter Holt Harvey, Hubbards, New Zealand Steel, Woolworths, and Comvita NZ Ltd. Alan's position at WOW Creative is Managing & Creative Director; Alan is also the senior marketing consultant in Visionz NZ Marketing Ltd.
